The Red Cockerel Cafe sits just off Lothian Road in Edinburgh, offering a cozy retreat that feels both city-centre convenient and quietly removed from the hustle. This café is a solid stop for anyone looking to recharge with a well-made coffee and something fresh to eat, whether you're on a daytime errand or taking a break from exploring the city.

The cafe's interior has a relaxed, intimate vibe, with a small but inviting patio that draws a steady flow of locals when the weather allows. It’s the kind of place where you might find students with laptops, couples catching up over tea, or friends sharing a casual lunch, making it a lively yet unhurried spot. The service tends to be friendly without being rushed, and there’s a subtle sense that the staff appreciate getting to know their regulars.

The menu leans towards simple, well-executed café classics with a local twist — think excellent espresso-based drinks alongside hearty options like smoked salmon or haggis and mushroom rolls. For those after lighter fare, the vegetarian pea soup or a cheese scone can hit the spot, while the cakes complement coffee breaks nicely without feeling overly indulgent. The sharing plates and larger rolls are particularly handy if you’re visiting with a companion and want something substantial but informal.

Morning or early afternoon is arguably the best time to visit, especially if you want to enjoy the patio in good weather. The atmosphere is generally calm enough to work or read but carries enough background buzz to feel sociable. It's clear from regular visits that the café serves a diverse local crowd — from those stopping by for a quick boost before heading to the nearby theatres or offices, to visitors settling in for a relaxed meal with a view of the adjacent gardens.

In sum, The Red Cockerel Cafe fits neatly into Edinburgh’s café scene as a dependable place to enjoy thoughtfully prepared drinks and straightforward, satisfying food, with enough character to keep you coming back without the fuss.

This was our first meal in Edinburgh and we accidentally stumbled upon it while searching for a place for lunch. We got there as there were shutting down breakfast to prepare for lunch. We were offered drinks and to sit on their patio while waiting for lunch service to begin. We got the sharing plate which was filled with deliciousness. The brown bread and butter with cheese and gerkins was delightful and one of my fondest food memories of Scotland.

I stopped for a cup of tea to enjoy the gardens and views, but the salads looks so tantalizing, I had to have a bowl. The setting is a perfect setting to relax.

The Red Cockerel Café & Terrace Lovely place with a surprisingly big selection of teas and drinks — honestly, it felt like a mini tasting experience! From fruity blends to classic brews, everything was fresh, hot, and full of flavour. Food is not bad at all. The staff kids and the cook lady, work very hard. They are very sweet. It's a lovely place to have a relaxing time. My dad and I recently visited, it was great. The pic is of my dad enjoying his meal.
